Michael Chekhov Acting Studio Hungary - Michael Chekhov Acting Technique® Masterclass

Michael Chekhov Acting Technique®

The Michael Chekhov Acting Technique® method focuses on the creative power of imagination and the presence of the threefold unity of human beings (thought, action, perception). Through the exercises, it not only activates abilities that the actor applies consciously, but also brings hidden faculties to the surface, enriching their existing toolkit.

During the course, participants master the fundamental tools of Michael Chekhov's acting technique through individual and group exercises, internalizing its core, essential vocabulary.

Practice-oriented training: the central theme is character creation and the character-building process. Working with the triad of thinking, willing, and feeling perception, every participant can discover the Chekhovian qualities of Truth, Form, Beauty, and Wholeness while developing imagination and radiation.

Topics of the 6-Day Intensive Training:

  • staging a monologue, monodrama (excerpt), or poem with the practical application of the Michael Chekhov technique - Levente Turóczi
  • speech and voice training as a means of spatial atmosphere and character radiation - Márta Kelemen
  • stage movement as a means of stage interpretation of everyday gestures and actions (relationship between rhythm, text, and scene; the effect of atmosphere on movement) - Levente Turóczi
  • individual consultation opportunities

Main Topics and Areas of the Intensive Training

Atmosphere (space, time, objects)

Discovering and creating the atmosphere of the character, their personal sphere, and their environment. Lightness-balance-heaviness, sustaining and sensing radiation, developing and activating imaginative power, the atmosphere of setting and objects, the decisive role of time in character and scene creation, and the impact of atmosphere on the scene and audience.

Gesture (archetypal and physical gesture)

Discovering and developing the actor's body as an expressive instrument of gestures. Expansion and contraction, radiating and sustaining, six archetypal gestures, discovery through the meaning of movement, gestures of artworks, the aim of gestures in scenes, and their impact on the scene and audience.

Attitude (qualities and quantities)

Experiencing a character's relationship toward other characters and toward the environment. The triad of thinking-acting-sensing, effects of character radiation, archetypal qualities of the four elements (earth, water, fire, air), intensity and sustain, and the impact of qualities and quantities on the scene and audience.

Center (character and actor center)

The decisive role of the character's center on their atmosphere, actions, radiation, and environment. Directions, intentions, permanent and variable centers, the relationship between actor and character, the role and use of masks, and the impact of the center on the scene and audience.

Composition (conflict, climax, pause, polarity)

Theoretical and practical possibilities of composition in the approach of the Michael Chekhov Acting Technique® method. Polarity, climax, pause, contextual and sentence-structure analysis and interpretation, script instructions, constraint and freedom in interpretation, visible emphases and balance of power in space and time, and the impact of composition on the scene and audience.

Speech Technique - Márta Kelemen

During the exercises, participants become familiar with their natural breathing, vocal production, and articulation, enabling them to employ speech mechanics in alignment with stage presence and dramatic situations. Rhythm, breathing, vocal, and articulation exercises individually, in pairs, and in group settings. The exercises target the whole body, the entire personality, and all faculties related to human voice production and speech used in stage work. The exercises are structured based on Hungarian and international methods (e.g. Linklater, Voice Gym, Alexander, Montágh, Fischer).

About the Training

The Michael Chekhov Acting Technique® method provides practical tools into the actor's hands that guide them toward genuine expression of their own capabilities and unique creativity.

It simultaneously develops the actor's conscious presence, creative willpower, and sensory capacity.

This process activates all known and hitherto unknown faculties of the actor, leading them beyond personal limitations into a state of complete "naturalness". Its effect is immediately perceptible.

The actor learns to trust their own inspirations and capabilities, regarding everyone as a free creative artist.

One of its primary instruments is imagination – activating imaginative power and creating atmosphere. The actor can use an Imaginary Body or Psychophysical Gesture to create and discover their character. Through this, they explore the character's movement, speech, feelings, and the world in which the character lives.
