Quotes on Light and Radiation

"Radiation is an ability that conveys the invisible essence of any kind of quality, emotion, or desire."
Michael Chekhov
To light once asked the force:
Tell me, are you not bored, doing nothing?
What I build or, if needed, tear down,
You only look upon and have no task at all...
And light answered: Where I am absent, there
Force works in vain: there is chaos.
Gyula Reviczky: Light

Complementary Topics of the Two-Day Intensive

Light as Gesture – Module Content

Within the harmonious threefold unity of the human body—thinking, willing, and feeling—participants create and experience:

  • the atmosphere-creating power of light
  • the gestures associated with lights, shades, and forms
  • the archetypal shapes of gestures
  • the character-shaping power of light and shadow through perception and radiation

All explored through the exercises of the Michael Chekhov Technique (e.g. Joerg Andrees, David Zinder, Christiane Goerner, Sarah Kane), working individually, in pairs, and as an ensemble.

Object and Light Animation – Module Content

Participants become acquainted with the possibilities of light as a visual medium, alongside its fine arts and performing arts dimensions.

Light as a physical phenomenon is an indispensable component of the universe, and thus a fundamental necessity for life and human existence. It is an unseen part of our everyday life that carries within it the constant possibility of rediscovery.

Through playful exploration with radiating and reflected light, we discover its:

  • space-shaping and mood-evoking impacts,
  • power to create personal space and micro-universes,
  • influence of light and shadow upon gestures,
  • effects upon object animation,
  • forms of authentic self-expression.

Within this module, we construct our own theatrical spaces using light sources and custom illuminated bodies crafted on site, relying primarily on the visual effects of backlighting and illuminating materials of varying properties.

Participants may keep and take home the objects created and used during the object animation sessions.

About the Training

The Michael Chekhov Acting Technique® equips the actor with practical tools that lead directly to the genuine expression of their personal capabilities and unique creativity.

It simultaneously develops the actor's conscious presence, creative will, and refined sensitivity.

This process activates every known and latent capability within the performer, leading them beyond habitual limitations into a state of complete natural ease. Its impact is immediate.

The actor learns to trust their own inspirations and artistic faculties, viewing everyone as a free creative artist.

One of its primary tools is imagination—activating the imaginative faculty and evoking atmosphere. The actor can use an imaginary body or psychological gesture to build and inhabit a character, discovering its movement, speech, inner feelings, and the world in which the character exists.
